I'm Desiree. Most people know me as Dez. I'm now a non-traditional senior at the University of Saint Joseph. Social Work major. What that means is that I am juggling education, work, and family.
School's expensive. Everyone knows it. In October 2014, I lost housing due to underemployment (almost as bad as unemployment) and I live in a transitional living program while I work part-time and try to finish school. That was hard to tell you but I need you to know my deal.
About me: There is a poem that I was rather fond of as a youngster where a woman tells her son that life for her 'Ain't been no crystal stair.' In it, she explains the need to persevere regardless of life's curveballs, and I believe I have done exactly that.
I went back to school at the age of 34. I have made the Dean's list several semesters. I won the Sr. Maria Rose deLima Nolan Founders' Award for Excellence in Political Study, completed an internship with the CT General Assembly, as well as week-long Women's Leadership conference at the New Hampshire Institute of Politics on the campus of St. Anselm College.
have earned no grade lower than a C. I only earned that C because I became homeless that semester, and being depressed about splitting my family (I have three children) apart so that we could all have short-term places to stay. This is a situation that persists. But I am determined to finish. I have seventeen credits left to my degree. I refuse to quit.
I'm 17--just 17, credits shy of my degree. Anything that anyone coming across this campaign can do to help me along in realizing my dream of advocating and being a voice for those who may not be able to speak for themselves would be JUST terrific. Don't you want somebody like me changing YOUR world and making it better?
