Marga's Medical Miracle
Marga suffered a stroke of bad luck (that is, an actual stroke) on June 13th and was hospitalized for two months. The stroke impacted the basal ganglia, and she was almost completely paralyzed on her right side.
Family and friends pulled together to help her on her healing journey. By discharge, she was quite mobile with the assistance of a walker and occasional use of a wheelchair. We were sad to see her leave the US and go back to Mérida, but are grateful for the technologies that allow us to keep in touch with her and follow her story.
Although she has made great progress regaining her ability to walk (with help) and use her right side, she is not out of danger. In the past two weeks she has had recurrent episodes of vertigo and fainting while using the walker, and the neurologist, Dr. Eduardo Cabañas, has diagnosed that she is having mini strokes in the vertebral basilar artery area (the front of the brainstem), which are both a symptom & a precursor to a major stroke.
The procedure to correct the occlusion of the basilar artery that is recommended to stop these small strokes will cost 50,000MXN (approximately $3,000 USD). Sadly, she has already exhausted her resources paying for her trip and treatment while in the US. Returning to the States is not being considered at this time, due to the increased risk of embolism/stroke as a result of flying.
Time is of the essence as this is a life-threatening situation that needs to be addressed asap. Please help us raise these funds for Marga.
