A Second Chance for Midnight

Donation protected

My family and I live in Grant Park and walking my children to school most days last year we got to know Midnight who lived in a yard along our route.  He is a 16 month old lab/hound mix.  He was such a sweet puppy and he always greeted us with a tail wag and happy dance.  I never even heard him bark. He lived with another dog who was aggressive and an owner who due to her own issues never socialized or provided discipline for either dog.  Midnight was abused and neglected in this home.  When the owner told me she had surrendered both to Animal Control, I took my children to visit him.  To my dismay he was in a barn behind another quarantine area not even close to where dogs who are looked at for adoption are housed.  The staff told me that he wouldn't let anyone touch him and would be put to sleep as unadoptable.  My heart was broken.  I was with my  8 year-old son, and we asked to see Midnight outside in the yard.  They brought him to an enclosure and he laid at my feet and was docile and sweet.  No one there could believe it, but I knew the sweet dog that was hiding inside this terrified, aggressive persona.

Three days later, we came back after he was neutered and given his first shots and took him home.  My plan was to foster him until I could find another home.  He is gentle and loving with my children and does not chew up things like most puppies.  However, we soon realized that Midnight while being sweet and very well behaved had a terrible anxiety about meeting new people that made him fear aggressive.  He had clearly been more abused than we had thought.  I took him to a couple of different animal behaviorists but even they felt that their programs would not be intensive enough for his anxiety to be reprogrammed and I was recommended to US Canine.  I have since met Angie Woods, the owner, and she truly is the dog whisperer that people who have worked with her claim she is.  After two minutes of meeting Midnight (and him barking and lunging in fear), she had him calmly sitting behind me based on her telling me what to do.  She then had me hand over the leash to her and she passed it to her son who works at US Canine and he was able to handle Midnight and have him calmly laying at his feet the whole time Angie and I talked.

I am a believer in Angie's program and have met friends in Atlanta now whose dogs have gone through the program and came out rid of their behavioral issues.  I want Midnight to have a chance to have a worry-free, happy doggie life.  I never thought bringing him home would be this complicated, but now I know that I was meant to save him from death and also a life of fear.  However, my husband and I can not afford the $2,000 the intensive 3 week program at Angie's farm (with her pack of dogs as co-teachers) will cost.

Please help us by donating $10 today.  He is going to attend US Canine starting on 11/28 so we don't have much time.  That just happens to also be my birthday which makes me know it will be a happy day.  I do realize that Midnight is just one dog and there are millions that need a home and a chance.  But I believe in Midnight and what an amazing companion he will be for another family after this program.  I believe I was meant to help him find his forever happy home.
