Manchmal passieren Dinge im Leben, die einfach bisher unvorstellbar waren. So war es auch bei unserer lieben Freundin Michaela (Michi) Benthaus.
Wir sind eine Gruppe von Downhill-Mountainbikefahrern aus Linz (Österreich) und waren an vielen Wochenenden im Sommer zusammen unterwegs. Am 30.09.2018 passierte etwas, mit dem keiner von uns gerechnet hätte. Michi stürzte bei einem Sprung im Bikepark Spicak, brach sich den 8. Brustwirbel und kann seitdem ihre Beine nicht mehr bewegen.
Michi ist 26 Jahre alt und stand kurz vor dem Studiumsabschluss.
Die derzeitige Diagnose lautet komplette Querschnittlähmung ab ungefähr Höhe der Brust. Die Ärzte geben ihr keine große Hoffnung, jemals wieder laufen zu können. Doch die Hoffnung stirbt zuletzt. Deshalb wollen wir – ihre Freunde – mit ihr zusammen um ihren Lebenswillen und ihre Hoffnungen kämpfen. Bei manchen Therapien und vor allem auch alltäglichen Hilfsmitteln hinken wir im deutschsprachigen Raum etwas hinterher, so dass die Krankenkassen eine Kostenübernahme verweigern.
Michis Leben ist aus den Fugen geraten. Ein völlig neues, grundlegend verändertes Leben hat für sie begonnen. Wir möchten ihr helfen, den Unfall als unabänderbares Schicksal zu akzeptieren, aus der Veränderung wieder neuen Lebensmut zu fassen und mit neu gewonnener Stärke durchzustarten. Eine Querschnittlähmung ist eine familiäre Katastrophe mit kaum absehbaren psychischen Belastungen und ist mit hohen Folgekosten verbunden.
Die Wohnung muss umgebaut werden und Fortbewegungsmittel für mehr Mobilität angeschafft werden. Außerdem müssen weitergehende Rehamaßnahmen, eventuelle Therapien oder andere Bedürfnisse, die Michi helfen ihre Lebensqualität zu verbessern, finanziert werden.
Daher bitten wir euch helft auch mit noch so kleinen Beträgen, ihr selbst, ihrem „kleinen“ Bruder und ihreren Eltern die finanziellen Sorgen vor der anrollenden lebenslangen Kostenlawine zu nehmen.
Michi war bei ihren sportlichen Aktivitäten immer mit voller Leidenschaft bei der Sache. Auch nach ihrem Krankenhausaufenthalt will Michi wieder aktiv Sport treiben, um so der großen Gefahr von Verkalkungen und Versteifungen der gelähmten Gelenke vorzubeugen, aber um auch weiterhin Gemeinschaft zu erleben. Zum Beispiel kostet ein Sportrollstuhl mehrere tausend Euro, Kosten hierfür werden von der Krankenkasse nicht übernommen, obwohl Sport die medizinischen Kosten eines Gelähmten spürbar verringern würde.
Zum jetzigen Zeitpunkt befindet sich Michi noch in der BG Unfallklinik Murnau. Eine stationäre Reha wird folgen. Danach ist sie aber weitgehend auf sich allein gestellt und auf die Hilfe ihrer Familie und Freunde angewiesen.
Über jede noch so kleine finanzielle Unterstützung würden wir uns daher außerordentlich freuen!

Paraplegia – Start of a new life
Sometimes things happen in life, which were unimaginable before. That is also what had happened to our beloved friend Michaela (Michi) Benthaus.
We are a group of downhill mountainbikers from Linz (Austria) and we have been spending a lot of weekends during the summer together. On the 30th of September, 2018, something happened that no one of us had counted with. Michi crashed at the jump in the Spicak Bikepark and broke her 8th thorax vertebrae und cannot move her legs ever since.
Michi is 26 years old and is just before graduating from University.
The current diagnosis is: complete paraplegia chest downwards. The doctors are not giving too much hope that she would ever walk again.
However, hope dies at last. That is why we – her friends – want to fight together with her for life and the hope to walk again. Unfortunately, the DACH health insurance systems is lagging behind and are not covering the full range of therapies and daily aid.
Michi’s life is now in pieces. A completely new, fundamentally new life has started for her. We would like to help her to accept the irreversible faith that the accident caused, to get courage out of the changed situation and to start ahead with the newly collected strength. A paraplegia is catastrophy affecting your family; it has barely foreseeable psychological burden; and it has high costs.
The apartment has to be modified according to the changed physical circumstances in order to allow more mobility. Besides that, additional rehabilitation sessions, therapies and other measures which improve Michi’s standard of living have to be financed.
Therefore, we would kindly like to ask you to support her, her “smaller” brother and her family with a small amount in front of the livelong financial expenditures ahead.
Michi has always put her full passion in her sports activities. Also during her stay in the hospital she is taking an active part in sports activities. This is good against the danger of calcification and stiffening of joints and also to stay socially involved. For example a sport wheelchair costs a couple of thousand euros. The health insurance is not covering the costs, even though through this it could reduce the medical costs for the paraplegic patient.
At this moment Michi is still in the BGU Murnau Clinic. Rehabilitation is about to follow. After that she remains on her own and dependent on the support of her family and friends.
