Hurricane Maria has been the worst hurricane to go through the island of Puerto Rico in the last 80 yrs. Over 3 million Puerto Ricans (who are also American citizens) are currently suffering from the aftermath of this Category 4 hurricane. 100% of Puerto Rico saw and is surviving the devastating effects of Hurricane Maria. The island is slowly recuperating from the damages( no communication, no water, no electricity, over 15-30" of rainfall, flooding, mudslides, etc). A small fraction of the Puerto Rican population had sought shelter, but even some of those shelters failed as the hurricane passed through with all its fury. Some people even lost their lives and for that, we are truly sad. It's a fact that no matter how much people prepared for Hurricane Maria, it was it was going to cause significant damage throughout the island. In addition, let's not forget that Puerto Rico was already acting as the safe haven and refuge for many from the smaller Caribbean islands affected by Hurricane Irma. Puerto Ricans went out their way to help their brothers and sisters from the near islands and were later hit with this catastrophe.

That is why we, Michigan Friends For Puerto Rico, want to be able to financially support Puerto Rican families in a direct manner through their journey to recovery.
We are looking to collect $10,000 to help families that are in dire and extreme need. These are families that lost everything material and may have also lost their means to provide for their own. For example, families may use this money towards buying mattresses, furniture, and other items much needed at home but may also put it towards entrepreneurship. With the money collected, we would like to help 6 families or more get back on their feet.

Michigan Friends For Puerto Rico is a group of longtime friends (Angie Bracero-Griesman, Maria I Rodriguez, and Karina R Weglarz) residing in Michigan who are very fortunate that their immediate families in Puerto Rico were not severely affected by Hurricane Maria and for that, they feel the calling to help those less fortunate.
