I am losing my eyesight and insurance wont pay for the surgery that will stop the progression of this sight-threatening disease.
In June 2017, I began experiencing significant visual loss in both of my eyes, high sensitivity to light, impaired vision, blurred vision, double vision, hazy eyes, severe eye pain, dizzy spells, headaches and nausea.
After going to multiple eye surgeons, I was diagnosed with Keratoconus on August 22, 2017.
The cornea specialist urgently stressed the importance of me getting the Collagen Crosslinking procedure done asap to stop the progression of this disease.
Keratoconus is a progressive eye disease in which the cornea weakens and thins, causing the development of a cone-like bulge and optical irregularity of the cornea. Left untreated, Keratoconus will lead to blindness and is not correctable with glasses.
Cross-linking is a minimally invasive procedure that causes collagen fibrils to link or bond, increasing the overall corneal stiffness and strength. The procedure helps stabilize the cornea and prevent disease progression.
The FDA approved this procedure in April 2016 but it is still not covered under insurance. Insurance companies are still considering it experimental. This will be an out of pocket expense I cannot cover alone. I need your help. The procedure will cost $6,140. Medications and recovery will be an additional $2600.
This is a time sensitive matter. Cross-linking will not fix the problem, I will still have Keratoconus, I will still need to wear hard contact lenses to see, but it will stop or slow the progression. The longer I wait to get the procedure, the more my condition will worsen and there will come a point where I wont be able to do the procedure due to the condition of my eyes. At that point, I would have to go on a transplant list for a new cornea.
