Michele Farris End of Life Care

Eight years ago I married into the wonderful Healey family and gained not just a husband, Brian, but instant sisters - Kathy, Debbie, Michele and Beth; and instant brothers - Pat, John, and Dave.  Two years ago my loving, funny, outgoing, give the shirt off her back, fix anyone a meal and a drink, give anyone a bed, sister, Michele Farris, was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer.  With the support of her partner, Darrin Turner, her sons Jeremy, Robbie, and Jack, and the rest of the family, Michele had a mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiation to fight it.  A year later she was cleared...she was in remission and we thought she had it beat, until 2 Fridays ago when she fainted at work.  She was transported to the hospital, and then transferred downtown to University Hospital's main campus where they gave us devastating news.  Her cancer is back...with a vengeance.  It has grown and spread into her brain, her lungs, and her liver.  She has over 60 tumors, many pressing on her brain causing seizures and partial paralysis.  Her doctors feel that with intense treatment, they could provide her and us perhaps another 6 months of “life”.  Without treatment, doctors have said that PERHAPS, depending on how fast the cancer moves, we will be blessed with 2 more months to spend with Michele on this earth.  Michele and her sons, (Jeremy, Robbie, and Jack Farris) and her partner, Darrin Turner, have decided that they don’t want her to go through the pain, nausea, and sickness that would likely come with treatments.  Therefore, she has decided to live the remaining days of her life at home, with her family and friends around her.  She will require frequent visits by nursing staff and ultimately Hospice to administer care and medicine to keep her comfortable and pain free.
