My name is Michael, and I would like to take the opportunity to say thank you for stopping by and showing an interest in this campaign.
Before we get to the meat and potatoes of it all, I'd like to tell you all a little bit about me and my situation. I have Cerebral Palsy, affecting my legs and back in particular. In my younger years I underwent some pretty major operations that enabled me to walk (picture a duck who’s had a bit too much to drink), but now I'm starting to lose this lifelong battle, and am having to rely more and more on my wheelchair. The constant strain on my hips, knees, lower back, and ankles means that - besides being in ridiculous amounts of physical pain - I cannot walk as far as I was able to, and that distance is growing shorter and shorter.
As I'm sure you can understand, this has been a very difficult transition; not only physically but mentally as well. The transition has been made even more difficult by the fact that the NHS has seen fit to provide me with a wheelchair that is not only unsuitable, but actually unsafe.
In November of 2015 I was provided a Quickie Life R by the NHS and while I am grateful, it's still unsuitable for an experienced, long term user such as myself. It's heavier than my old wheelchair (An RGK Maxima) and this puts a lot more stress on my lower back. There's no wheel camber (The wheel camber is basically the vertical angle of the rear wheels) and having a camber of even a small amount means that the chair is much more stable on uneven ground. The castor forks are too far back meaning that the chair is much more likely to tip forwards. Since November I have fallen out of my wheelchair more than 20 times (I stopped counting after 20) and have the bumps and scrapes to show for it.
So what's the solution?
Well to be frank, a new wheelchair; one that meets my needs directly, as an individual. The Kuschall K Series Carbon would be a very good chair for me because, at 7kgs or so, it's half the weight of my current wheelchair, which means less stress on my lower back. The wheel camber can be set at 0/3/6 or 9 degrees, which means it will be much more stable on uneven ground, and the front castors are much further forward. The Kuschall K Series Carbon would be a much safer wheelchair for me to use day to day, and would greatly improve my overall quality of life.
