On August 27th of 2007, I gave birth to a baby daughter
named Meila Yael Ruth Prater. Meila weighed 5lbs and 13 ounces. She had a head
full of brown hair with honey blonde highlights, a soft cat like cry, and a
deformed and fragile heart as a result of a chromosome defect called Trisomy
4q. Meila lived a short 5 months, yet during those 5 months she impacted
my life and the lives around her in a remarkable way.
In her honor, and to help other families who have or will have children with long term health challenges, I am opening MeilasHouse. MeilasHouse will be a low to no cost transitional housing solution for parents of children who are or will experience extensive hospital stays.
I understand firsthand how difficult it can be to try to care for yourself when your child is in the hospital. You can find yourself overwhelmed by thoughts of home, an unclear diagnosis, fear, helplessness and fatigue. The furthest thing from your mind is tending to your physical and emotional needs, as you cling to hope and pray for peace.
In addition to lodging, MeilasHouse will offer breakfast and dinner for the families, Group Therapy, In-Services with health professionals, and spiritual guidance. MeilasHouse will also offer babysitting and fun activities for siblings who are visiting; Mentoring for mothers during utero, and the alignment of families with community resources for additional assistance.
I am reaching out to everyone to donate anything that you can, in an attempt to reach our goal of $10,000.00, to be used towards opening our first MeilasHouse. I am hoping to launch our first home by December 2013, and I KNOW that we can do it!! Thank you for your support.
