Please support me as I travel to Brazil to help preserve Indigenous plant medicine/knowledge!


Hi! My name is Meg Krug, and I'm incredibly excited about this profound experience I am embarking on.
I have been asked to join a non-profit organization (The Sofie Foundation) for a plant medicine research project, but need help funding my personal expenses.

In December a small team of us will be traveling down to Acre, Brazil to live with the Yawanawa tribe for two weeks. We will be meeting for the first time with a medicine man and another tribal elder (who can identify over 5,000 plants) to come up with a way to document, and preserve their vital ancient knowledge. We will be living the Yawanawa way. There are about 1000 Yawanawa spread out over 8 villages over half a million acres of the Brazilian Amazon rainforest.




With a widening generational gap, the more modern youth are not as interested in learning the traditional plant medicine knowledge. The tribe's sacred and crucial wisdom will disappear with the elders if it is not saved.

More than 50 percent of our modern medicine comes from or is mimicked by biological sources.
It's been documented that traditional medicinal uses of plants (ethnobotany) have generated shortcuts to the discoveries of modern medicine.
Preserving traditional medicine is important because of its potential to discover new medical treatments, as well as its socioeconomic and cultural relevance.




Over time we have become more and more disconnected from the earth. Do you feel that? This is a way for me (and you) to reconnect with the planet that has always provided for us. I have deep-seated respect for the Indigenous people who discovered and have utilized plant medicine to help heal people for millennia. They are key to preserving biological diversity.




For as long as I can remember I have had a deep connection with nature. While pursuing a B.S. in Environmental Studies, I focused on botany and conservation/restoration. I interned with the lead botanist of the Fish and Wildlife Division on Joint Base Lewis-McChord in WA and also volunteered for the Nature Conservancy to help preserve native plant species on the prairies in WA.




I have searched my whole life for meaning and purpose.  I feel very strongly called to be of service, and to be a steward of the earth that literally supports us every day, and has the incredible capacity to heal each one of us. 

I hope to continue to expand my own healing capacity, and through leading by example, be able to spread that wisdom to others.

I have already spent (with some borrowed money):
$2,000 on flights.

The money raised will go towards airfare, a travel visa, the rest of the program fee, and buying the necessary gear for my visit there such as : a hammock with mosquito net, quality rain gear, charger/adapter, lodging, food, and transportation.
