A Sincere and Urgent Request from Tika and Madhavi
First of all I want to share very good and exciting news with you that Madhavi (my wife) and I are expecting a baby by the end of July of this year.
The next thing I’m sharing is not as good of news. A few weeks ago I was taken to the hospital because I had a violent seizure, thanks to 911. The hospital found that I had a brain lesion in the right frontal lobe. In order to gain a better understanding of the situation, I visited the University of Michigan Hospital. They were able to give me more complete information. The end result is that I need to have surgery to remove the tumor and maybe some part of the surrounding structure in my brain. The biopsy test to establish what it actually is has not been done, and I am told that it will be done at the time of the surgery itself.
The doctor also advised that the surgery carries some critical risks and some possible post surgery complications. Due to the serious nature of the surgery, I chose to go to Mayo Clinic in Minnesota as they are the leading experts who I hoped might offer safer treatment options. They too suggested that surgery would be the best treatment option for my condition and did suggest that there are big risks during and after the procedure. I inquired if there is an alternative treatment option like Pencil Beam Scanning for Proton Beam Therapy (PBT) for my condition. They advised that PBT isn’t used for primary treatment of a brain lesion and cannot replace surgical resection. So I have to be convinced to go for this surgery. For this I will have to take unpaid leave for about 8 weeks or more. Right now I should be expecting an eight week recovery time. Although there is no real certainty as to what problems I may face as a result of the surgery, with the slight possibility of death as well as a possible brain hemorrhage and temporary weakness on left side of the body. There is also the possibility of having to receive additional (of different kind) therapy for my motor skills after surgery. Mayo clinic has scheduled the procedure for the date of February 20th at 5.30 am.
That being said, I unfortunately missed signing up during open enrollment period for the Short Term Disability Insurance at the State of Michigan Government who I have been working for. I will now need to wait until August of 2015 to enroll. This means that I will be short on my paid hours for the time that I will have to take off for my treatment, as I have exhausted all of my annual leave as well as sick leave time. My wife had to quit her part-time job as she needed to go with me to hospitals and appointments, and be with me pretty much all the time. However, I feel blessed and very grateful that I have received 240 hours in total from the central leave bank (40 hrs) and direct donation (200 hrs) from my dear friends and colleagues which will cover my paid time for until late March and that will help us be able to take care of our regular expenses, loans, rental cost and other bills. Please note that I have already reached the maximum of leave time donation, and I can no longer receive any more hour. When all the donated hours from 240 hours that I have received is used, I will need to stay unpaid.
Clearly, this was a very sudden incident, so I am financially unprepared. I do not have any savings or any other option to take care of my and my family's accomodation, travel expenses at Rochester as well as the deductibles and out of pocket maximum cost.
I wish I didn’t need to do this, but I am also asking for you to consider helping me with some monetary contribution so I don’t have to suffer and so I can focus on my medical treatment. If there was any other option I would not be asking you all to consider this.

I am also asking Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore to see if they can give me an appointment so I don’t have to go all the way to Minnesota. However, there is no real certainty that I will get an appointment sooner than or close to 20th of Feb. The surgical intervention needs to happen as soon as possible per advice from the doctors. So most likely Mayo is where the surgery will happen which is outside the network of my insurance coverage, and the deductibles and coinsurance is higher.
Your tax deductible donation will definitely provide us a big relief and can help us move forward.
I am also asking for those of you that can to forward this e-mail to anyone who I have missed and who may be willing to help us in this situation, and to pray for me and Madhavi. We serve a great God and I know He is able to take care of people like me and Madhavi through this time.
