Typhoon Disaster Medical Response

My Name is Julie Peddicord, and as a Registered Nurse and former EMT with previous international and domestic disaster experience, I have been asked to join a volunteer disaster response medical team in the Philippines in response to Typhoon Haiyan. The organization I am working with is Remote Area Medical (ramusa.org), who have a strong history in serving humanity both domestically and internationally during times of need. They have been asked by the Philippine Red Cross to mobilize medical teams to the area to staff a field hospital in response to the medical needs facing the people.
In 2010 I went to Haiti for two weeks following the earthquake.
Our medical team of doctors, nurses, medics, and support volunteers served in a makeshift hospital treating patients with very few supplies. We had the only functioning ambulance in the area, and ran mobile medical clinics into areas which had yet to be reached by medical personnel.
This response will be similar and possibly even more difficult due to weather and total devastation to all resources and local infrastructure. As is typical with many non-military or government affiliated disaster medical response teams, we are responsible for all of our travel expenses to the field hospital and back. The cost of transportation alone will be over $2,500. I am asking for help to cover the travel costs, wet weather gear, and basic medical supplies which are not yet available on the ground. I will be sleeping outdoors in the elements and will need to be completely self sufficient. As a first responder it is our duty not to place any additional burden on an already stressed system. I am Red Cross and FEMA trained in multiple areas of disaster response. As a nurse with critical care, psychiatry and nephrology experience in combination with my EMS and disaster response roles in the past, this is my life's calling. I will provide updates as time and resources permit. All funds will be utilized for disaster response needs and medical supplies. Thank you for your time and consideration to help fund this effort.
