Hope for our ageing population

My name is Marama, I am from New Zealand. I have been fortunate to live in many countries and I see the same everywhere … Our Ageing population, yep that’s right our Grandparents and their friends not able to access quality healthcare, either in their own homes or in a residential home for the elderly.
I am blessed to have had two sets of beyond wonderful grandparents and even a Great Grandma until I was a parent myself – I was 27 when she died. As a teenager my parents remarried so my Grandparent tally doubled, lucky me!
Some of them have left us now, but I still have my favourites, they are the ones I am closest to. They have now moved into an Aged care facility and nursing home but like millions of others worldwide have no access to a visiting General Practitioner or Family Physician. We have a huge close family so they are fortunate that my Aunties or someone can usually take my Nana out to see a Doctor or specialist.
I now live in Australia where the statistics are 80% of all patients are “dumped” by their Family Doctor when they move into an aged care facility or are housebound.
These Doctors no longer have the time to care for them or have no interest in aged care.
I am trying to establish a Visiting Doctor service for our “Golden Years Generation” that will start in Queensland, with bases in Kuranda, Far North QLD and eventually Brisbane, QLD. Then we will go to Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth.
I have the Doctors, I have the building (s), I have the patients, I have the Government approvals… now all I need is your support to help us get kick started.
The medical centre based in Kuranda, will also service the local community and outreach areas. It has a large ageing population of indigenous, refugees, migrants and Australians. This clinic will specialise in Aged Care, Diabetes, Drug and Alcohol Addiction, Mental Health and Chronic Disease. It will provide the local community with preventative education and care management for Diabetes, Cancer and Chronic Disease.
A clinic for women and children will also be established.
There is currently no 100% bulk billing centre, the closest being 30km one direction and 18km the other.

Many people in this community do not have transport and can not afford the $70+ to see a Doctor. Often illnesses are left untreated until the patient is forced to go to hospital, putting further pressure on our already FULL local hospitals.
A recent news article stated that 60 local elderly patients were recently admitted to hospital with the flu in one weekend! Our service will be able to help prevent this.
I realise that this is not for everyone, but I do know most of us have had Grandparents or elderly relatives or have known elders that have helped shape who we are. This is your chance to help give back to them.
Every $1 helps us get this home visiting service started and keeps our doors open. It will also create approx 300 jobs nationwide.
