Last night, March 3rd approx 1 a.m. the McKay family (Ian, Amanda, Kiyoko 10, Kaya 7, and Maikah 3) were awaken by power going out in their home followed by a funny smell. As they began investigating the home in the dark,m water pipes in the walls and ceiling ruptured causing significant amounts of water to flood the lower story destroying everything. As they made their way out side smoke was billowing out of the corner of the attic. While waiting for emergency responders flames began erupting across the roof out of the attic. Within 5 minutes their world was rocked upside down. Everything upstairs was subject to fire damage and smoke while down stairs was subject to water and smoke damage. The family was able to escape with their health and clothes on their backs. There was not even time to get shoes. The morning after the fire the City of Laguna Niguel has red tagged the home preventing them from entry as the homes structural integrity has been compromised. It is unknown what could be reclaimed if anything. They truly need your help, even a dollar, or a share amongst friends will help. They are now forced to find another place to live, replace belongings and get life back to normal. The structure is covered by the land lords home owners insurance policy but the contents were not covered and subject to replacement by the tenants. Please help whatever is within your comfort. As philanthropic members of the non profit and charitable world it’s our turn to help this family and their selfless efforts.

Update 1

McKay Family Fire Updates

Fire: The Fire did in fact originate in the wall and the attic burning around much longer than our original time line of noticing something wrong. Still not an exact source of the start but something electrical related.

New home: Off of random chance we were able to find an available town home in Dana Point close to the kids school and received keys TODAY!

Clothes: A clothing retailer reached out and took amazing care of us today. Each member of the family received extremely generous donations of clothing and house hold goods. We can’t thank them enough. Truly made it hard to miss what was left behind. They have gone above and beyond the call of humanity and community. We love you so much.

Furnishings: Due to our overwhelming support by all of you here on GoFundMe we can begin furnishing our home, acquiring kitchen supplies, picking out bedding, all the stuff that turns an empty town home into our home.

Work: City National Bank is being extremely supportive and cooperative with myself and my family while we navigate this transition. I hope to return shortly and keep life moving.

Thank you to all of you! The communal support from our family in the Car Community, School, City National Bank, all of our friends and family, you have all shown us what community is and how beautiful it is to watch the power of man kind. Everyone who has taken the time to register and navigate this website and donate any amount is a hero and changed our lives. As challenging and emotionally draining as this is, your support is ensuring that we are able to stress just a little bit less and be there for our children. We love you all and will recover together.

*UPDATE 3/30/18*

Hi Everyone,

I have been sitting at my computer trying to think of what to say to you all...We are completely overwhelmed by the support from  our community. I have such an amazing group of Moms that have spent their time to pick up my kids from school and keep them over for playdates. It is amazing to see people that don't even know us, but shower my family with so much love and support.

As we are in our 26th day after the fire (but who's counting?) our lives are actually coming back together. We have done so much thinking since the fire. Ian and I still have our ups and downs, but it's 100% all about the kids....Maikah, our 4 year old, is ok and I'm sure he probably won't even remember this incident. He says little things like, "I miss my train table", or "I don't like the fire monster"....Kaya, our 7 year old, comprehends a lot of what happens, but she is actually enjoying the new place. She is very clingy and scared to be alone in the house. Now, as for Kiyoko our 10 year old, she is a completely different story. She is my little Mommy Mini-Me. She hasn't talked much about it, or even cried since then. I know she does it a lot for my benefit because she doesn't want me to worry about her. Regardless of where she is at in the grieving process we will arrange time with a Therapist so she can speak freely.

We have come to terms that this is going to be a long, slow process of recovering and living more simply.

With all of our hearts, we thank you a MILLION times over and over. From the selfless contributions to the daily text and FB messages just to check on us, makes our day.

So, with all of that said, you are all true Angels and have blessed our lives in more ways than one.

Thank you again so much,

Amanda, Ian, Kiyoko, Kaya and Maikah
