The Matt Tamburri Fundraiser

"Guys, Matt is in that ambulance. We need get to the hospital now."

In April 2012, what began as a fun game of football for a sorority philanthropy event on a hot Charleston, SC day ended with one of Phi Gamma Delta's finest Brothers fighting for his life.

Matt had suffered a full cardiac arrest, triggered by a congenital heart defect that has ailed him since birth. Before the ambulance had arrived, he lay brain-dead while being administered CPR by a Citadel cadet, his body seizing and turning blue. Upon arrival at the hospital, doctors placed Matt in a medically induced coma. Shortly thereafter, his parents received a call from our Chapter President. For about a week Matt remained trapped in the coma until finally awaking. During his 16 day stay at the hospital, he received two surgeries: one installing a defibrillator/pacemaker device, the other repairing the hole in his heart. For those of us who bore witness to this tragedy, the reality of what Matt and his family have faced is truly incomprehensible.

While Matt continues to make tremendous strides down on the road to recovery. the reality of frequent testing and looming adversity linger. Matt faces further ailments related to the procedures, including a blood clot caused by his pacemaker wires. Furthermore, Matt must keep a vigilant watch on his health, constantly being administered tests. Cardiological medical bills are incredibly expensive placing a heavy burden on any family to pay. After the hardships the Tamburri family has faced, their devotion and support of Matt is inspiringly apparent. As any and every family would, they have courageously adhered themselves to their son's needs.

In response to this event, our Chapter held a Red Cross CPR/AED/First Aid certification class. Right now, the Tamburri family needs our support. As Matt's proud Brothers, we are beginning a campaign to provide relief for a family that exemplifies support, and Brother that embodies excellence. Furthermore, next year our Chapter hopes to begin volunteer work at the Medical University of South Carolina Children's Heart Center; visiting patients as well as aiding the families in their fundraising efforts. We cherish the opportunity to still have Matt in our lives. We also ask that you each donate whatever you can, as any and all donations help.

Please feel free to contact our Chapter, should you have any concerns or if you would just like to check-in and wish Matt the best. We thank you so much for your generosity.

Best Regards,

Lambda Chi Chapter of Phi Gamma Delta
