My brother Mark has been fighting non hodgkin's lymphoma for over 5 years now. Mark is currently on his third clinical trial for his cancer treatment and has suffered through 2 stem cell transplants, leaving him with a compromised immune system. As this long fight continues, Mark is once again needing our help.
Last friday afternoon, October 21st, he started having some issues walking. Saturday morning, October 22nd, he woke up feeling chest pressure and having difficulty breathing. He dialed 911 and was rushed via ambulance to Beaumont Royal Oak hospital. His potassium levels were dangerously low and he began receiving IV treatment. As the next few days progressed, his body became weaker and weaker. Tests at admission finally came in after about 3 days positive for CMV. This is a condition that many people do have but most show no symptoms. Unfortunately, this viral infection can have a very negative effect on someone with a weak immune system. An additional treatment for this infection was ordered. His body continued to get weaker and he now cannot even lift his arms or lift his head off of his pillow. His breathing became more and more difficult. Consulting with the doctors again, it now appears that the CMV has brought on Guillain-Barre' syndrome, a condition in which the immune system attacks the nerves and has progressed from his feet up his body and now is affecting his breathing. He has been intubated and is receiving treatment. His prognosis is guarded and we are hoping for a full recovery, but his road will be very difficult and will take some time.
