In the fall of 2016, we lost our two beautiful yellow labs, Sophie and Sadie, just six weeks apart, to chronic kidney disease. I vowed to do something to make sure their legacy of love wouldn’t be forgotten, and soon learned there were so many of you that, like us, love their pups.
The concept of a local dog park had been bounced around, but just never took off. Until we got our new pup, Miss Reagan (pictured). We quickly realized what others had been saying - a community park where dogs can run, play, and socialize is sorely needed here. A place where trainers can offer classes, groups can offer adoption events. A place for our pups.
i approached our town manager with a bold plan. If Town Council would grant permission to allow use of a parcel of municipal land, I’d raise the money to build it. And after months of meetings, deliberations, reviewing sites and best practices from around the country, we’re ready!
Marion’s Dog Park will be located as part of the Riverbend Park Complex, hugging Country Club Road just Past the entrance to the picnic shelter. There will be separate spaces for large and small dogs, trees, and rolling landscape perfect for play dates.
The Council is considering enhancing our efforts by providing shrubbery screening along the footpath, and possibly even upgrading the fencing. The Town is adding a gravel parking lot to the Complex to provide parking spaces for the existing playground, the amphitheater, and the walking trail. And soon, the Marion Dog Park!
Now it’s up to us! If we want a Marion Dog Park, we need to raise $10,000. That buys and installs basic fencing, signage, and a few amenities for exercise for the pups and a couple benches for we humans.
