What's All This Then?
I'm Mariel, an artist and design student living in Raleigh, NC. I'm graduating from the North Carolina State University College of Art and Design in December and before beginning the next chapter of my life, I want to pay homage to the people who made me possible. The inaugural journey could only be to the Frida Kahlo Museum in Mexico City.
Why Frida?
As a woman artist, I owe my very existence to the ones before me who made this path the natural choice. The first woman to make me believe that I could be an artist was Frida Kahlo. Not only has she been one of the biggest influences on my personal life and work, she is also my inspiration for all of the art and writing that I do around identity development.
Why Now?
The Frida Kahlo Museum will be hosting an exhibit of Frida's many garments and personal items between now and January 31st, making this the perfect opportunity to visit. Frida is known for her use of clothing and hairstyles to construct identify and express complex thoughts on the personal and political events that were happening around during her life. Her work has always been the main inspiration for the art and writing I do around identity development. This trip will be an awesome way to kick-start my post-graduation career and further development as an artist. I hope to take this trip December 22 to January 30.
The Cost
The $1500 I'm trying to raise will be matched with the $1200 that I can save by December to cover flight and some car rental, plus accommodations. I based my price on all of the cheapest (but safe & logical) options I could find. By helping, you'll be funding a dream trip but not a luxury one.
The Rewards
I plan to send out thank you's before the trip and most others during or after it, so that they will be inspired by experiences you helped make happen. I'll post a link to examples of each reward in the weeks leading up to the trip.
If there's a reward you want but don't see listed, just contact me and we can work something out. (The same goes if you'd like to contribute in some other way)
What if the Exhibit Ends?
That'll be sad, but I'll still send out rewards for donations and will still use the money towards visiting the museum as soon as possible.
What if You're Over-Funded?
Any cash over what's needed for the trip will go towards my next pilgrimage to the home, workplace or museum of a creative woman.
