Marcelino’s Hope Fund 2 Halt MS

Donation protected
Hi, my name is Martha Lopez and this fundraising is to help my husband Marcelino raise the money he needs for his Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transfusion
(HSCT) treatment to kill the beast called Multiple Sclerosis (MS).

My husband and I, like many people on this website, never thought that we would be forced to ask for financial assistance from family, friends, and total strangers. Of course, we also never thought that one of us would be stricken with such a devastating diagnosis.

MS is a chronic progressive disease of the central nervous system. When your immune system starts attacking your brain and the spinal cord insulation called myelin (example, the electric cable's insulation protects the fiber from exposure, that's exactly what myelin does, it protects the nerve's fibers) and can cause horrible disability and in some cases, even death from complications of MS.

As the disease progresses, the nerves are destroyed partially or completely, causing a person to have pain and lose functions throughout the body. - https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/multiple-sclerosis/symptoms-causes/syc-20350269

October 22, 2017 changed our lives completely. After several repeated visits to the emergency room complaining of sudden lack of coordination or unsteady gait, slurred speech, dizziness, fatigue, partial or complete loss of vision, pain all over his body, my best friend, my husband of twenty-four years of marriage, father of my three boys, Marcelino Jr., (age 21), Alex (age 17), and Eduardo (age 12) their father was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis.

The first two weeks, I cried inconsolably, fearful of the wrath and toll this illness would have on Marcelino. Picking myself up by my boot straps, I vowed to Marcelino to search and arm ourselves by exploring all medical options to help fight this aggressive, progressively debilitating disease.

Since October, when he was diagnosed with MS, he has been taking three different medications which do not seem to work or stop the progression of his illness. New and active lesions continue to appear in his brain and the side effects to the medicine seem to be worse than the illness itself.

My poor hubby says that even though he doesn't say anything, he experiences pain throughout his body, 75% of the day. Through this my husband continues to work full-time as a landscaper as the main bread winner.

I work two jobs given that we do not know what to expect from day to day. Symptoms flair-up without notice. we now live one day at a time. I don’t want to think about the future because it's scary. Instead I want to think that there is hope for a cure.

Armed with knowledge and research, I found that our insurance does not cover one of the most promising treatments to halt the disease. This promising treatment called Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transfusion (HSCT) is not approved by the FDA and is in the experimental phase at Northwestern Hospital in Chicago for a cost of $125,000. This same treatment is available in Puebla, Mexico at Clinica Ruiz for a cost of $54,900.

This treatment consists of harvesting a person’s OWN stem cells from their bone marrow and then pulling them out through the blood. The immune system is then broken down with chemotherapy drugs until it is almost completely gone.

The patient’s stem cells then are transplanted back into their body and the new immune system starts to rebuild itself free of MS! This has had an 80% to 90% efficacy rate at halting this horrible monster.

Clinica Ruiz has performed more than 2,500 HSCT during more than 20 years! They are all alive and getting better from their disabilities caused by MS
http://www.hsctmexico.com.

We are required to make a cash payment of $54,900 before we can head to the Clinica Ruiz in Puebla, Mexico for his HSCT treatment.

We are asking for your help to raise $54,900 for the cost of this treatment by June 1, 2018. to send Marcelino to Mexico to halt the progression of his disease and hopefully regain some quality of life.

We are eternally grateful for any contribution, big or small. If you are unable to donate, please share our page and most of all, PLEASE, PLEASE say a prayer for my husband and my family. I believe that there is so much power in prayer and we couldn’t do this without all of your prayers and support.

Thank you for taking the time to read our story and our journey with MS.

Please keep praying and sharing! God Bless you all for your compassion and kind heartedness ❤️

With much love and gratitude,

Marcelino, Martha, Marcelino Jr., Alex and Eduardo
