I've recently received notice that I have been nominated to attend the 2013 Junior National Young Leaders Conference (JrNYLC) in Washington D.C.; as you may imagine I am very honored and proud of this nomination. My St. Cloud Middle School (SCMS) math teacher, Mrs. Tilker, nominated me to attend this conference and represent middle school students from SCMS & students across the nation. Mrs. Tilker felt that my high academic achievements and my leadership skills merited recognition by this opportunity. This nomination is very prestigious at the middle school level. Every teacher has the ability to nominate a child however it requires them to complete documentation justifying why those nominated met the leadership qualities to attend; therefore, very few teachers actually submit nominations. Following is information obtained from the JrNYLC website:
The Junior National Young Leaders Conference (JrNYLC) offers mature, high-achieving middle school students the opportunity to learn about leadership by studying the leaders of the past and by focusing on social advocacy to make a positive impact in their homes and communities. Through an examination of both different historical time periods and characteristics of leadership, students will gain a better understanding of what it takes to become an effective leader.
Each session of JrNYLC is designed to educate, inspire, and motivate students by giving them the confidence and leadership skills that will take them through high school and beyond. Attending students receive personal guidance and direction from dedicated and experienced faculty advisors and are also provided with materials designed to foster self-directed experiential learning.
The JrNYLC curriculum was developed by Dr. Marguerite Regan, a former high school teacher and social science department chairperson with a doctorate in political science from Purdue University. Dr. Regan has been involved in the creation and development of innovative educational curricula and programs for over 30 years. Under Dr. Regan's direction, the curriculum provides a unique approach to leadership training.
As with most great opportunities, there is a cost involved; in order for me alone to attend this conference it costs approximately $2,000. I am allowed to fundraise and solicit donations to offset the cost of attendance. As you know, this is a lot of money and most parents including mine are not able to just hand me this amount of money. I would like to request your donation; no amount is too small or too large, every amount donated will bring me a little closer to attaining my goal of attending this prestigious conference which will allow me the opportunity to represent middle school students across the nation. I have enclosed my letter of nomination for your reference.
