Dominica: Malika's family H. Maria
Donation protected
Hello and thank you for clicking here to learn more! My name is Susan and I live in Brooklyn New York. With so much destruction recently wrought by Hurricanes Maria and Irma, there are many people and countries in dire need. While you have probably seen a lot of press about Puerto Rico, there has been little coverage on the island of Dominica (not the Dominican Republic), which is a small island with a population of just ~71,000. Dominica has been devastated by Maria (see here: https://www.nbcnews.com/news/weather/hurricane-maria-damages-dominica-s-main-hospital-leaves-war-zone-n803711 and https://www.nytimes.com/2017/09/19/world/americas/hurricane-maria-caribbean.html and http://www.aljazeera.com/news/2017/09/small-island-dominica-hit-hardest-hurricane-maria-170925174603370.html ).
My daughter's wonderful nanny, Malika, is from Dominica, where her 3 grown children, sister, and extended family live. While they are safe, they have lost their home and belongings, and the island continues to face lack of electricity, drinking water, shade, and basic facilities.
Malika has given my daughter so much love and learning, and is like family to us, so Jeff and I have set up this gofundme campaign to help her family recover. Malika lives here in New York City and will be sending money and food, water, and supplies to her family and community as soon as a system on the island has been set up to receive. Please give if you can -- any amount helps. Thank you!
Update on funding 10/2: Thank you for donating over $1000 as of today! I spoke with Malika about how she prefers to receive the funds, and we agreed that I'll transfer it to my bank account and hand her the money in cash. She will then be able to purchase materials/food/etc and liase with others in the Lefferts Gardens Brooklyn neighborhood who will be sending items to Dominica. She also hope to send funds to family once power/infrastructure has improved to a certain extent.
