Mahalaya's Summer Dance Experience

Mahalaya dances with her heart!
http://www.projectpearls.org/about/

From the moment that she could breathe on her own, she loved moving to music; music that is oftentimes only the sound of her own heartbeat.

Now at 10 years old, she dances anywhere and everywhere. On sidewalks, in the mall, in grocery stores, hallways, parks, and especially on the beach, Mahalaya is always dancing. As some of you may have also witnessed, Mahalaya entertains/distracts herself and others in our classrooms and our meetings with her extensions, leaps, flips, and turns (and occasionally with her ukulele and raspy soulful voice).

Since she was three, she has studied with the amazing teachers at the Westlake School of the Performing Arts (WSPA) in Daly City. After training five days a week in ballet, lyrical, contemporary, modern, jazz, Philippine ethnic dance and Polynesian dance this year, Mahalaya competed as a soloist in the Youth American Grand Prix Ballet Competition and ranked in the top twelve in her age group in the region. She also recently competed in the OnStage New York Regional Competition and got 1st place in her age group along with Best Technique and Stage Presence. Also, this year Mahalaya won a ballet scholarship and highest score overall in her age group at the New York City Dance Alliance (NYCDA) regionals and qualified to compete in the national convention this summer!

At NYCDA, along with the competition portion of the convention, dancers also get to take classes from Master teachers from all over the nation, from places like The Joffrey Ballet, Dance Theater of Harlem, some that you may even recognize from the TV show, So You Think You Can Dance. Following her trip to New York, Mahalaya was chosen to do an intensive ballet and modern training for four weeks with Viktor Kabaniaev who was featured in the critically acclaimed dance documentary, First Position.

As you can imagine, we are extremely excited for Mahalaya to have these opportunities but we are in need of your loving generosity to support Mahalaya's summer dance training and travel. The cost of just her summer training and travel will be more than $5,000. Please donate if you would like to support Mahalaya's dancing this summer.
