Madison's Road to Recovery

Madison Uhl's Journey

In mid-July 2017, Madison noticed a swollen area on her right jaw.  We doctored for several weeks without a diagnosis that helped.  On September 5,  a CT scan indicated a possible cancerous tumor surrounding her jaw.  A biopsy verified the tumor is cancer, Ewing's Sarcoma, a type of cancer that occurs most often in and around the bones.  Ewing's Sarcoma is rare and typically affects children and young adults.

Today, September 14, we are beginning Chemotherapy which will last for 12 weeks.  After the Chemotherapy, Madison will have surgery to remove the tumor which will include part of her jaw bone.  To reconstruct her jaw, the surgeon will remove a portion of the fibula bone from her leg,  After recovery, Madison will have several more months of Chemotherapy.

Madison is 17, just beginning her senior year at Sheldon High School.   She is involved in volleyball, track, and dance team.  She is planning to attend USD in Vermilion, SD next fall majoring in accounting.  Madison is a fighter and is determined to overcome this obstacle.  She is my oldest daughter and the bravest person I know.
