SHAVE MAC'S HEAD! OCT 26th!
After 7 years, I will be shaving off my dreadlocks! Friday, October 26th at East Rockingham High School in Elkton, Va. Ever since I started locking my hair, I knew that the "death date" of the locks would need to be something special. I have decided to raffle off the actual shaving of my head! I will also be accepting monetary donations of all amounts, every little bit helps! The money that I raise will go towards two very important causes; breast cancer research and primary education in Jamaica. In addition to several friends, coworkers and friends of friends who have had breast cancer, several members of my family have dealt with the disease. A few years ago, my Uncle Scott passed away as a result of breast cancer, and it was then that I decided to donate half of the proceeds to the Susan G. Komen For The Cure breast cancer foundation. The other half of the money will be donated to the Broughton Basic School in Negril, Jamaica. This cause is important to me for two reasons; without the influence of the beautiful people and country of Jamaica, I would never have locked my hair and learned so much about the loving, generous and inclusive culture that the island possesses. Secondly, as an educator, I know how fortunate the schools and teachers are here in the United States - even the struggling schools have so much more in the way of materials and support than the schools in Jamaica. When I visited the school this past year, I saw firsthand the creative ways in which the teachers were working with the students, such as using bottlecaps to teach numbers and colors. Even a small amount of money could help to purchase basic school supplies such as pencils and glue!
I'll take ANY and ALL AMOUNTS OF MONEY TO HELP THIS GREAT CAUSE! If you think you can make it to the head shaving event on October 26th in Elkton (near Harrisonburg and James Madison University) PLEASE let me know because your donation earns you a raffle ticket and if your number is picked, I hand you a pair of scissors and a razor and you get to make me bald!
