Paddling to the Rose Festival

Donation protected
This year Mission High School's Dragonboat team is planning to compete in the century old Portland Rose Festival this summer in Oregon and we need help getting there.

Background:
I work at a public high school in San Francisco that is dedicated to ensuring students are in a safe and supported environment that helps them advocate for themselves, grow as a community, and are poised for success in college. Unfortunately, the need to provide to all my students heavily exceeds the resources available. My students are beautiful individuals that are challenging racial and social-economical stereotypes and how society views them and their families.

I have the privilege of coaching Dragonboat to a diverse group of students (the most diverse high school team in SF) whose families are struggling to survive the exponentially increasing standard of living in San Francisco. These students desperately need a sense of belonging as the community they came into is slowly deteriorating around them.

Over half of my athletes have recently immigrated to the US from China, Nicaragua, Mexico, and Ecuador. Many of them work to support their families but are being unsupported themselves. Many of them of them have never had the opportunity to travel outside of San Francisco, let alone California.

Dragonboat is the ONLY team sport in the school that does not receive funding because it is not considered a "AAA sport" by the athletic department.

Proposal:
This year many of the high school teams in San Francisco are going off-site to compete with teams across the globe in places like Hungary, China, and Vancouver. Since it is necessary that we have an equal opportunity that all paddlers can join we have decided to travel to Portland for their annual Rose Festival.

We are able to take 22 paddlers to Portland. They will be flying or driving and staying in Portland for 3 nights while they compete. They are entering an adult division and will be competing with over 100 teams in the upper north-west. Because the expenses are very high we are requiring them to chip in themselves, host car washes, and do several other fundraisers. This gofundme is not to cover their cost completely but to help make the trip manageable for them.

Conclusion:
I am hoping that with your help I can provide support and resources to these students to ensure they make it to our summer race and are given the access to a travel experience they deserve.
