MCA goes to NYC

The McArthur High School Chorus has experienced a renaissance in the past three and a half years. Our Chorus Program has seen major development in a relatively short amount of time. The Chorus Program, which accepts students from a vast array of educational, economic, and emotional levels, encourages students to overcome their fear of public performance and teaches the importance team work. In 2016, McArthur High School’s Chorus Program earned an “Excellent” rating (the second highest score) at the Florida Vocal Association’s District Music Performance Assessment after a six-year absence from the high-caliber event. In 2017, our Chorus earned a “Superior” rating and qualified for the State Music Performance Assessment for the first time in 13 years. All that development has been instrumental in us reaching our most recent milestone. In March 2018, Mr. Armbrister, Chorus Director, announced our Chorus Program was selected to perform as part of a national chorus at the world-renowned Carnegie Hall in New York City in April of 2019! This accomplishment will bring a great deal of pride to McArthur High School and the City of Hollywood, FL community at large. Additionally, after two appearances with the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Chorus, this is Mr. Armbrister’s third time leading a chorus to Carnegie Hall. The music the students will learn is of a high intellectual caliber and will challenge the students to reach beyond their normal standard. These funds will also pay for air fare, ground transportation, admission to a Broadway musical, and sightseeing. CODA Concerts, has high standards for its nation-wide search of choruses for their showcases, but being selected alone does not guarantee us making the trip and performing. While the students of McArthur High School are hard-working, motivated, and high-achieving individuals, many come from low-income families. 74% of the school’s students receive either free or reduced lunch, and all students receive free breakfast. Each participant for the four-day Carnegie Hall trip must pay $1,700 for the performance of a lifetime, airfare, and lodging. The total cost of the project is $85,000.
