Manhattan College iGEM Fundraiser

Dear Family and Friends,

During the summer of 2017, we are participating in a summer research competition at Manhattan College. The project is run through the International Genetically Modified Machine (iGEM) foundation. iGEM is an independent, non-profit organization dedicated to education and student development within an open and collaborative scientific community. Our team is tasked with conceptualizing and executing a project based upon ideas in synthetic biology. This area of research uses techniques that merge engineering, biochemistry and molecular biology in order to design a useful biological machine. The goal is to stimulate creativity with advanced education and generate an innovative and fun learning experience.

This competition is international and includes over 300 teams from all corners of the globe. Following a summer of dedication and hard work, every team is invited to Boston (MIT campus) to present their work at the annual iGEM Jamboree in November. At this 4-day conference we will be afforded the opportunity to represent ourselves in front of some of the most prestigious programs in the world.

Our team has decided that we want to address renewable energy sources and develop a biological system that will create electricity. Moreover, we would like to design that system to be solar in nature, in essence, creating a bacterial machine that acts as an artificial plant. We are concerned about the fact that in today’s world, energy is a necessity not only to sustain our society, but to also further our advancement.  Access to reliable energy sources is a key factor in stabilizing many facets of our country’s ability to serve and sustain its constituents. However, the necessity for producing energy from green, carbon neutral sources has become of paramount importance, owing to the need to reduce our current carbon footprint.

In order to have every interested student participate in this unique experience, we are tasked with raising upwards of $20,000. This amount includes resources for the project such as chemicals and lab materials. More importantly, we are seeking funds to support each of the team members directly. Many of us do not live with in an easy commute of the college and will require summer housing on campus. We are also seeking help for our team registration, travel and accommodations at the Jamboree this fall.

A donation of any amount to help our team would be greatly appreciated and will go a long way toward making this rewarding experience possible.

Thank you for your time and consideration. We are excited about this opportunity and appreciate your time and support. You may visit our team website at https://manhattan.edu/life-at-manhattan/clubs-organizations/IGEM.php

Sincerely,

The Manhattan College 2017 iGEM team.
