Help Max Recover - #MAXimumMobility

Donation protected
On the eve of July 4th, our precious little Max suffered an unfortunate injury to his spine in a routine jump. We later learned he has developed Intervertebral Disc Disease -- common in dachshund breeds -- and suffered a ruptured disc which left him paralyzed in his hind quarters. He lost all surface-level sensitivity but was still able to experience deep-tissue sensitivity, indicating the nerve -- and hope -- was not entirely lost.

On July 5th, Max underwent surgery and is currently in stable condition recovering with lots of pain meds. He's had no seizures post-surgery, and is starting to show very early indications of regaining bladder control; all positive signs. Things look as good as they possibly could given the extent of his injury, which is needed given this more severe type of disc surgery leaves him about a 50% chance of walking again some day. He's not out of the dark yet though, and there's much rehabilitation and TLC to be administered in the weeks and months ahead.

I hope to retrieve Max from the veterinary clinic out on Long Island this coming Saturday. He will likely require manual relief of his bladder 2-3x per day, and regular physical therapy and laser treatments in the hopes of regaining motion in his hind legs. There is no guarantee any of this will work, but I know he would not give up on me if the tables were turned. As long as he is still the same happy puppy we've all come to know and love over these past 6.5 years, and not in any pain, I will continue to do everything in my power to try to nurse my best friend back to health. I dream of seeing him run through the Central Park greens again some day, stick in mouth, smile across his face.

Unfortunately with this potentially mobility-saving surgery, week-long hopsitalization, and forthcoming rehab treatments and care comes significant veterinary costs. Please help by donating a small amount towards Max's ongoing medical expenses. Anything you can contribute is appreciated.

It must also be said that I'm supported by an amazing group of friends (truly family) here in NYC and across the country. The outpouring of condolences and well wishes has been heartwarming and invigorating. For a single man living alone in NYC without family nearby, I've never felt more supported and loved... and I know Max can feel the love as well. We'll be providing regular updates here and on Facebook, and hope to see you out in Central Park one day soon.

Very truly yours,
Alex + Max.
