Lori & Sherri- Midwives for Haiti

Dear Friends and Family,

Lori and Sherri will be going to Haiti in March to volunteer our time and skills to a midwifery training project with Midwives for Haiti.

Haiti is the most dangerous place in the Western Hemisphere to be pregnant or a newborn due to the lack of skilled obstetric workers.  In the rural areas of Haiti, only 25% of births are attended by someone with the training and supplies needed to make childbirth safe. Midwives for Haiti has been working since 2004 to train nurses to be skilled birth attendants.The organization is well known and respected in Hinche, has the support of the population, and works in partnership with the Haitian Ministry of Health.

We plan on bringing with us supplies, both medical and non-medical (we are each checking one suitcase for supplies and a carry-on for our personal things). Haitian midwives need medical equipment and medications to provide life-saving health care in rural areas. For example, each midwife needs tools that are sterilized, a steady supply of sterile gloves, basic obstetrical medications, and textbooks that have been translated into Creole.

Rather than ask for item donations, we are asking for monetary donations to ensure we bring only the essentials. We are funding the trip ourselves, so no donations will go towards our travel. Any remaining funds (if we run out of luggage space) will go directly to Midwives for Haiti.
