Helping out a Former Foster Youth

To whom it may concern:

It is my pleasure to write a letter of support for Lila Hartage.

In 2009, Lila Hartage graduated from Julian Christian High School and in May 2014, she graduated from Sierra College. After a couple of years of hard work and trying to decide where to attend university, Lila was  recently accepted into Grand Canyon University in Phoenix,AZ where she will start school in August.

Lila is an active participant in the Nevada County CoLiving Network Program (CLN) and I have worked directly with her for the last few years. Lila has consistently participated in the program’s classes, activities, and weekly meetings. The goals of the program are to prepare foster youth for independence and success in their adult lives, with a particular focus on education, employment and permanency through relationships with other healthy adults.

Lila is an incredibly resourceful youth. She consistently utilizes resources in her community to help achieve her immediate and future goals. In the short time I have known her, I have seen her employ many differing agencies. To name a few, Lila uses CLN to gain access to college and financial aid; Behavioral Health to monitor and counsel her emotional and mental wellbeing; EOPS (Educational Opportunity programs and Service) for educational success; Women of Worth for shelter and support; Campus Life for emotional support, friendship and healthy lifestyles; and A New Day for recovery.

Not only does she have the self-sufficiency to locate and utilize local services, she has the ability to establish relationships that are vital for her emersion into the adult independent world. Lila is currently attending Grand Canyon University.

Lila overall plan is to live a healthy lifestyle and to be present in her relationships and commitments. She has many obstacles to overcome just to participate in the community at large. But her tenacious desire for a fulfilling life has given her the courage to escape a controlling, devastating lifestyle. She has found refuge with a local women’s shelter and they have helped orchestrate many services that are helping Lila heal and realize her potential in the world. Since moving into the women’s shelter Lila has overcomed a lot in the time I have known her.

She is a Pre-Med and is enjoying her science classes immensely. She plans to one day create a program for foster youth, so that they can receive proper dental care. She is honestly one of the most motivated, driven youth that I have ever met. I am constantly amazed by her courage to overcome her past and her desire to create a promising future.

Lila has absolutely no financial support. She has applied for school scholarships, local scholarships, the Chafee grant, and now the FCS scholarship. Lila only has several months left on her current lease.. She has several scholarship options but they will not kick in until the 2016/2017, Lila needs income to move into a dorm or apartment the campus. She has been applying for local campus jobs.

We hope that by starting this campaign, that we can raise all the funds necessary to help with the continuing education of Lila. We believe in the future of this courageous young woman and the opportunities that God has given her. Lila lacks immediate family support, but is known for making "family" wherever she goes.

Lila is an excellent example of how to overcome anything . She has need, she has merit, and she has ambition. Thank you for taking some time to check out our campaign and thank you for any and all donations and support....GO LOPES!
