Help build a library in Ghana

Akwaaba! Welcome, and thanks for taking the time to find out what this library in Ghana is all about. For those who don't know, Anthony and I moved our family to Ghana 3 years ago. I am an art teacher/school administrator and Anthony is a lecturer/architect. We live in a small neighborhood just outside of Accra with hundreds of children, most who do attend some sort of schooling, but many who cannot read and do not have access to children's books. In 2011 we collected a container of books and other educational resources and shipped it over here. In 2012 we began a Saturday reading program, and children have been gathering on our front porch ever since. We've outgrown our make shift library space, and the literacy needs of the children exceed what we can manage meeting just once a week. So, we decided to use the land in front of our home to build a Library Learning Center for our community. We dug and laid the foundation, installed the iron rods, and made the concrete blocks for the walls. Next we'll raise the walls, install the roof, and begin adding finishes (windows, doors, washrooms, bookshelves, tables, paint...) Almost daily the children stop by to find out how the library is coming along. We are hoping and praying that we'll finish by the end of August, just in time to kick off the new school year. With adequate space, we will be able to offer reading classes for children and adults, homework tutoring, art activities (such as Easter Egg Decorating!), Bible studies, creative writing, and so much more. All we need is the additional funds to finish up the building quickly, and the Library Learning Center will be good to go. Thanks again for your interest in helping us reach our goal!
