Liam's Fund

In October 2014, Liam, then 9 years old, was diagnosed with an aggressive, malignant brain tumour called medulloblastoma. Up until then, Liam was active, sporty, always in a good mood and cheerful.  He was diagnosed during a routine eye checkup at Specsavers in Maidenhead, Berkshire - and from that moment on thrown into a life changing series of brain surgeries, craniospinal radiation, and chemotherapy. The surgery to resect his massive (4x4 sqcm) tumour left him with posterior fossa syndrome, and the boy who was a good little footballer and a high achieving student at Lowbrook Academy was left with coordination, balance, speech and memory issues to name but a few. He will need therapy to alleviate his symptoms for a very, very long time. He will need chemotherapy with a host of additional side effects for at least 48 weeks. There will always be a risk of relapse. Life as Liam knew it no longer exists.

But here is the amazing thing - despite everything, Liam has the most amazing attitude to life. He just wants to get on with treatment. He goes to school and football training whenever he can. Yes, he's wobbly, slow and his speech is slurred - but he loves being with his friends, and out and about. He still makes people laugh every day. His smile is lopsided - but full of hope, and love.

Cancer is very complex and a brain tumour brings a whole different level of complexity to the condition. Liam, and the whole family, are getting help from many charities now, and we are very grateful. Liam's Fund raises money to be given to charities and organisations that help children like Liam.  We will use some of the money in cases where Liam, or his brother, Simon, who has also been terribly affected by his brother's illness, need something to get them through this, and to keep them strong, happy and cheerful.

Many people have already given to Liam's Fund to help pay for his proton treatment in the USA - we will be forever grateful for all your help, every donation is like a ray of light and hope for us - thank you from the bottom of our hearts!
