ONE GIANT LEAP for Alzheimer's Society

For anyone that's been impacted both directly or indirectly by dementia, more specifically Alzheimers, you will understand how emotionally upsetting, frustrating and just how powerlesss this disease makes you feel. Looking in at someone you so dearly love, your parents, in my case my nan, slowly but surely becoming someone else. Someone different, someone who was once so full of life and independent become confused, scared and reliant on others to carry out the simplest of day to day activities. When a loved one is diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, the effect on your entire family can be overwhelming, not just emotionally but often physically and financially. Alzheimer's is an irreversible, progressive brain disorder that slowly destroys memory and thinking skills and, eventually, the ability to carry out the simplest tasks. Many think that memory loss is a part of getting old, however severe memory loss that interferes with daily life, is not and should not be accepted or understood as part of the 'normal' aging process. In memory of Kathleen Mary Harrigan, beloved mother, my grandmother and a great grandmother, I will be taking one big leap in the fight of such a demoralising disease. On 6th March 2021 I will be jumping out of a plane at 10,000ft as a small gesture to celebrate her life but more importantly to fundraise in the hope to support others who are living with this disease and their family members doing what they can to support their loved one to feel safe, secure and feel like themselves.
