Let’s help together our elderly

Please Give Your Support to vulnerable, elderly & disabled Bhutanese Refugees of Beldangi & Sanischare Camps.

In the early 1990s, tens of thousands of Bhutanese people were forcefully evicted from Bhutan--victims of ethnic cleansing. They’ve been living in refugee camps for more than 27 years under the auspices of the government of Nepal and with humanitarian assistance and protection from the UNHCR, the UN refugee agency.

Since the third country resettlement program was introduced as part of a durable solution in late 2007, more than 112,000 Bhutanese refugees have so far been resettled in eight different countries (Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands, the UK and the US) and the majority (more than 93,000) have been resettled in United States of America.

According to UNHCR Nepal, currently, just over 7,000 Bhutanese refugees are living in the Beldangi and Sanischare Camps. There are still some number of refugees who were accepted for resettlement before the closure of the program and are waiting to depart. It is estimated that resettlement departures will conclude by mid-2018 and that by January 2019, some 6,500 refugees will remain.

The current situation in the camps, especially for our senior elderly parents and vulnerable and disabled refugees, is terrible and critical. They need immediate supplemental relief assistance and some kind of support.  More than 250 of our senior elderly parents are facing this critical situation in their last phase of life after their family members have departed for third country resettlement. UNHCR Nepal has been exploring the possibilities of providing some kind of support for Persons with Specific Needs, especially the vulnerable, elderly and disabled refugees currently residing in the camps in a sustainable manner.

The following Bhutanese Communities and Organizations have extended their support and are actively involved in a fundraising campaign for the support of elderly, vulnerable and disabled Bhutanese refugees of Beldangi & Sanischare Camps:

Organization of Bhutanese Communities in America  (OBCA), Bhutanese American Association of Houston ( BAAH) Texas, Kirat Community Organization of America Inc.  All funds collected will be used solely to support the most vulnerable refugees of the camp.  We will provide periodic updates on the use of funds generated by this campaign as the program and fundraising progress.

This is the right time to break our silence and stand with Bhutanese refugee community in these camps with our generous support and cooperation. Please extend a helping hand before it’s too late. We’re aware that many resettled former Bhutanese refugees and community organizations have already provided support to earthquake victims in Nepal back in 2015 and many are still extending their support for various social and developmental projects.

On behalf of resettled Bhutanese communities and camp management committee, we would like to sincerely appeal to our all fellow former Bhutanese refugee friends, Bhutanese organizations and every individual to extend your generous support and make donation in whatever amount you can to support the Vulnerable, Elderly & Disabled Bhutanese Refugees residing in these camps in Nepal.

Thank you for your generous contribution and support.
