Leena Claire Sheppard is a beautiful 11 week old baby who was recently diagnosed with Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis (LCH), a rare type of Leukemia. Leena has spent the first weeks of her life battling severe tummy issues, reflux, and rashes. After a couple of trips to the emergency room and being admitted twice, the doctors decided to do a colonoscopy and endoscopy and found parts of her GI tract infected with the disease.
More tests are to come to determine the full extent of the disease, but the biopsy results put her at “high risk” and in need of chemotherapy for at least the next year. This is already a rare diagnosis - one in a million - but her age and the location of the disease makes her diagnoses incredibly rare, with only 40 documented cases across the nation.
Your donation will be used to help Leena’s parents, Drew and Kelsey Sheppard, afford proper treatment and care for Leena as she fights to beat LCH. Drew and Kelsey are both teachers – Drew teaches 10th Grade English and coaches soccer, and Kelsey is an Elementary Special Education Teacher, cheerleading coach, and tutor. Due to Leena’s compromised immune system, she is unable to attend daycare – that mixed with the intensive treatment and care needed has made working for both parents impossible, so Kelsey will be taking time away from work to be with Leena every step of the way.
