Ypsilanti High School DECA Nationals!
Help the first ever Ypsilanti High School Student to win the Michigan DECA State competition go to Nationals!
Letter from my Student:
My name is Lavonte Davis and I am a student at Ypsilanti High School. All throughout high school I have tried to be the best that I can be in school. I am a member of the National Honor Society, the Captain of the Varsity Boys Basketball Team, the Treasurer of the Senior Cabinet of my school, as well as the President of DECA Club here at YHS. These past few weeks have been stressful to say the least with my team going to states for basketball and DECA. My adviser and I had to raise approximately $2000 dollars to take my team of 7 students to the state competition.
I unfortunately am the only one on my team that qualified for the international competition in Anaheim, California. But I am extremely pleased because I am the first student in the history of the DECA club at this school to make it all the way to the International conference.
I feel like I have to represent the community in everything that I do. Whether its reading to kids at Estabroook for NHS, playing basketball for the basketball team or competing in DECA. At the international conference not only will I be representing Ypsilanti but I will be representing Michigan as a competitor for the sports and marketing event series.
I see a lot of this as good practice for the future as I will be attending Northwood University (one of the main sponsors of DECA ) on a full ride 4 year basketball scholarship starting this fall. The only problem that I face now is money to attend the conference. It will cost approximately $2,500 dollars to attend. This includes 2 round trip tickets for my adviser and I to California, 2 hotel rooms for 4 nights, as well as a expensive registration fee that we have to pay to DECA. And all of this is due by April 10th.
