Paralysis Recovery Session

Donation protected
Hello everyone!!!!!!  I want to tell you a true story and then request assistance in reaching our goal.  The majority of people reading this should know of our cousin LaTasha Washington.  If you do, you will remember her situation and how she became paralyzed in November 2005.  Just as a recap, LaTasha woke up one morning and was unable to walk.  Our uncle picked her up, put her in the car and she was rushed off to the doctor’s office.  After doctors ran various test and a CAT scan performed, she was informed that she had a cancerous tumor on her spine.  The cancerous tumor caused her to have a spinal cord injury and left her paralyzed with no movement below her belly button. All of this happened at the age of 33.

We are raising money for therapy in Florida with Paralysis Recovery Specialist Ken Bryant, a well-known therapist among the spinal cord injury community.  Bryant has experienced a 100% success rate with restoring some feeling or movement among his clients.  His method involves restoring or rerouting signals from the brain to the muscles, he does not repair a damaged spinal cord.  Bryant’s program usually consists of a five-day program at his Pinellas Park, FL location, working only a couple of hours each day with his clients.  The clients then continue strength training on their own with a personal trainer at a gym near home.

LaTasha is a proud person, always helping others and putting her own health on the back burner.  We feel that for a paralyzed person, this is a good opportunity for her to go for this therapy.  The obvious result that LaTasha would want, would be able to move her lower limbs, but if she can come home and have regained her core, it would be amazing for her to be able to raise both of her arms over my head at once without falling. That would give the opportunity to reach for things she needs and to be able to sit up straight with no support of a back reset and not have to lean forward to balance.

We are needing to raise $5000 to cover the cost of the therapy, airfare to Tampa, FL, hotel accommodations (for 5-days) and local transportation.  If you need to know more about LaTasha and her character, take a look at this excerpt from a Devotion that her Pastor, wrote about her on his WordPress web page after she told him that she was getting a hand cycle and was going to join him on his Annual Memorial Day Bike Ride:

… For those of you who do not know Tasha Washington, let me share a little bit about her. Tasha is a member of the church that I pastor. She was a valued member of my staff when I was a member of the Detroit City Council. Before she lost her ability to walk, Tasha was one of the most energetic persons I have ever known. She was fast, smart and positive. One day she felt a pain in her legs and learned that a mass was pressing on her spine and she would never be able to use her legs again. As she went through an extended period of therapy, I bought Tasha a set of light weights and encouraged her to work out on her own.

Since then, Tasha has performed the role of assistant secretary and event-planner for the church. Tasha is into everything, and in large measure has become as much the “face of the church” as myself. I am sharing some of her story, because I have never heard Tasha say a negative or bitter word, even as she defies all odds and keeps moving forward. I fully expect to see her participate in my Bike Ride next year.

I thank you for taking the time to read her story  and if you decide to support her, we will be so grateful in helping us reach our goal.

 Sincerely,

The Family of LaTasha Washington
