Laptops for The Childrens Institute

#GoBeyondGiving
Hello! I’m Shania Khatri. As I’m sure a lot of you already know, over a year ago I was diagnosed with Reflex Neurovascular Dystrophy (RND also called AMPS) . RND is a form of muscular dystrophy and chronic pain. My RND resulted from a severe brain injury in 2015. A big part of my treatment was the 3 weeks I spent inpatient at The Children’s Institute Hospital Pain Rehabilitation program. There I relearnt skills such as walking, writing, and balance. This treatment transformed my life after diagnosis; I went from nearly house bound, and barely surviving school days, to a much healthier able-bodied version of myself.

The Children’s Institute is a not for profit rehabilitation center that provides services to children with all kinds of disabilities. Treatment and recovery from feeding disorders, muscular diseases, brain and spine injuries, and genetic diseases. Children like myself spend weeks to months in the hospital receiving treatment. We miss holidays, birthday parties, family events, and school as we battle for our health.

I would like your help to donate laptops to The Children’s Institute for inpatient kids to use. The goal is around 20 laptops as well as a laptop cart for storing and charging.

Here’s why this is going to make a difference: Kids who spend time out of school for health reasons often fall behind. Health treatments always come first and we end up missing months of school for appointments and hospital stays, so our grades slip. As a high schooler, a one month stay in the hospital was life changing for my health, but the result was 6 months of makeup work in school. It was stressful, exhausting, and detrimental to my health. Many schools give children makeup work, but without laptops to communicate with teachers or to do research, its almost impossible to muddle through work alone. Education is not only for the able-bodied, it should be equally accessible to all children, and laptops are a huge step forward.

Living in a hospital for weeks or months is also very isolating. A lot of kids come from out of town, or even out of the country with one family member. They don’t get to see their friends, talk to their family, or keep up with the world. It’s really important for the mental health of these kids that they have access to technology that allows them to do that. When I was inpatient, none of the kids in the hospital went home for Thanksgiving or Christmas. Most of them didn’t have the technology to Skype with family and friends either.

Please help support the education of children in hospitals! Your contribution makes a difference! Each contribution takes us closer to donating 20 laptops! Stay tuned for updates.

UPDATE:
I was asked to share some more information about myself and my campaign so here is that information. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions!

My name is Shania Khatri. I'm a high school student in the United States. The organization I'm raising funds for is The Children's Institute. Based in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, with many locations, TCI serves as a rehabilitation hospital for kids that need physical and occupational therapy, a day school for special needs children to participate in school, an outpatient therapy clinic, and much more! I was a patient at TCI for over 2 years, first in their outpatient therapy clinic, then inpatient, then outpatient again. The money raised here will be donated to TCI's rehabilitation hospital. From there TCI will purchase laptops and laptop cart(s). TCI and I have agreed that they should purchase as all of their purchases are tax exempt. From there the laptops will be placed in the inpatient rehabilitation hospital and kids will be free to use them!
