My father, Lance Hitchings, is a Kansas-born freelance product illustrator living in Portland, Oregon. He's an incredibly talented artist (you can check out his website here!), having done illustrations and animations for Nikon, BMW, and Nike. Unfortunately, a recent set of events has jeopardized not only his livelihood, but his personal well-being.

A U.S. Navy veteran who did 2 tours in Vietnam, my father was exposed to an injured friend's blood during his service and contracted Hepatitis C. The disease has left him with cirrhosis of the liver. A year-long round of chemo in 2003-2004 proved to be unsuccessful, necessitating a second round this last year. The treatment took a heavy toll on his mind, body and spirit, making this last year one of the hardest he's ever endured.

The good news is that the treatment appears to have been completely successful. As of now, there doesn't seem to be a single trace of the virus left. The bad news is that the treatment's many adverse side-effects left my father debilitated and unable to work this past year; as a result, he lost his clients, who found other sources to fill their needs. With almost no income for a year, he's now on the verge of a financial crisis.

However, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Now that he's off the chemo and back to his old self, my father is rebuilding his client base and has already landed his first new client. He's wrapped up his first project with this new client and they're so pleased they want to replace all their product photos with his illustrations; in fact, these next few months may be his busiest yet! But due to the projected production schedule and his client's invoice payment cycle, my father isn't going to start getting paid for at least 2 or 3 months. Without a little help, he's not going to make it that long.

He's exhausted all of his financial resources (including borrowing from friends and family) and crowd-funding seems to be his last resort. After wrapping up a campaign on Indiegogo that only produced mediocre results, we're now hoping his cause will find a better home on GoFundMe!

This is a chance to make a real difference in a good man's life. If my father can just stay afloat until the paychecks start coming in again, he'll be back on his feet and well on his way to rebuilding his successful illustration studio. He's barely staving off eviction, so we need your help in getting enough money to keep his home and his livelihood. Any and all contributions will be much appreciated! Thank you for for taking the time to read.

Warm regards,
Tyler
