LOVE FOR LUBBERS

Donation protected
Hurricane Dorian has dealt Abaco and her islands a devastating blow. Lubbers Quarters has been heavily impacted and no basic infrastructure remains. There are no docks, no roads, and there are few, if any, habitable accommodations. These conditions must be restored before the rebuilding process can begin. What normally is provided by government entities do not exist here; we are on our own to collect ourselves, plan, and bring our islands back. We know many of you love the Abacos and the island of Lubbers Quarters… some fell in love after only one trip, others have been visiting this amazing area for years, many even generations!

Our Goal:

Our goal is to clear the way so that people can begin the process of rebuilding Lubbers Quarters. Our island needs a “whole” approach to this so that we can work together for the common good.  Once these conditions have been cleaned up, individuals will have a pathway to rebuild, a foundation on which to put our lives back together. We need to establish basic infrastructure. This means we need docks to park and land materials, equipment to clear destroyed homes and debris, accommodations to house workers and volunteers, and we need to be able to feed and supply these efforts.

Our plan:

First, address the basic needs of those who remain on the island after the storm. There are a few residents that remain and they are having a difficult time getting supplies. Next, we want to clear the roads and fix a few essential communal docks. We then need to patch Lubbers’ Landing so it can be used as a base camp; it’s cottages will be used to accommodate workers/volunteers, get our commercial kitchen up and running to feed workers/volunteers, and branch out from there to build our island back. We will need money, materials, and equipment to do this.

Our Story:

Amy and I (Austin Smith) have lived on the island for 27 years and have called it our home for most of our lives. We started out living in the woods on Lubbers at the age of 19, saving our money and building rental cottages. We then purchased Sea Level Cottages from my parents right after hurricane Floyd (rebuilding is not new to us), and then for the love of what we did decided to build Lubbers’ Landing. In the aftermath of this devastation we find ourselves asking… what good is Lubbers’ Landing (a few cottages, a small bar/restaurant) without the community? The island as a whole is what makes Lubbers such a special place, a place where on June 9th, 2019, I was baptized in the waters off our shore. My plea here is not for us, but for the island of Lubbers as a whole, and I so want to be a part of its revival.  One board at a time, few hands turning into many… with your help we can do this! I will promise to bring you guys along for the ride, posting pictures and letting you know what’s happening step by step. My hope is that with your help we emerge from this unimaginable catastrophe as a stronger island- a stronger community!  The island that some call home, some have visited, and we have all grown to love…
