Maya, Victoria, Madeleine Joseph, Max, and Tatiana are a team of six students from Luther Jackson Middle School in Falls Church who won 1st place in the Virginia Odyssey of the Mind State Tournament on April 13th, 2013. We have now advanced to the World Finals at Michigan State University and will have the amazing opportunity to spend four days, meeting, working, and competing with kids from all over the world.
Odyssey of the Mind is a creative problem-solving program for children from kindergarten through college. It tests children's creativity and problem solving skills through a variety of challenges. Most importantly Odyssey emphasizes teamwork. Our team worked hard since late fall preparing an 8 minute performance for the challenge "ARTchitecture: The Musical - that showed our knowledge of ancient architecture, had us creating original artwork, songs and choreography. All the work is done exclusively by us, the team members, from designing the set and costumes to writing the songs and dialogue of the performance. During these months we also trained for the "spontaneous" challenges which help them learn to think on their feet solving technical or verbal challenges.
