John Hopkins Summer Program Fund

Hi! My name is Kyron. I am a sixth grader that is 11 years old and attend a charter school in Newark,NJ. I am a honor roll student at my school. I love math and always have had a natural talent and ability to see numbers and ideas in a "different way." Because of this innate talent I have often been teased and called a nerd but that has been ok because I know that I just have always LOVED math and learning. My "nerdy" math ability, love of reading and gravity towards school is something I have embraced even when faced with obstacles of peer socializing. My parents have always been supportive of my love of learning and I know it will get me where I want to be in life. Because of my love, effort and dedication to being a great student I skipped 6th grade math and take a seventh grade math course (yay me!!). This fall I was nominated by one of my teachers to apply for the John Hopkins Talented and Gifted Program. She saw something in me that previous teachers may have but didn't act on and with my parents support I took the SCAT test and scored high enough to be accepted into their program. Since I got accepted I get to take online courses through John Hopkins, go on special trips and experience a chance to go to college for three weeks in the summer by myself to learn advanced studies in math. This oppurtunity excites me because I get to live on a college campus and experience what it would be like to go to college in six years, and meet new people who love math like me. Also the opportunity to learn new things and push my own thinking is something I enjoy doing daily and it is great to get to go and be around other people with similiar interests and abilities. It also validates and gives me a feeling of pride to know that being a smart "nerd" is cool and celebrated!!! With all the excitement the reality of that I need help with the cost of tuition. Like anything else in life, this opportunity cost a whopping $4,000 to attend. This includes, room and board, meal plan, materials, field trips while there, etc. My parents are great but as a teacher (my mom) and a drug counselor (my dad) they just don't have it and I know are scrambling around to get this and other funds together for myself and my brother for our summer activities. I am asking, pleading and simply praying for any and all assistance. Any donation, small or big, would make a life altering difference in my world today, this summer and for life.
