Kilimanjaro is on fire!

Tax deductible
Kilimanjaro is on fire and we need your help! In partnership with Kilimanjaro Project  and The African Rainforest Conservancy  (ARC).

Mt Kilimanjaro, the rooftop of Africa and the highest free standing mountain in the world at 19,341 ft (5,895m), is on fire.  A fire broke out on Sunday evening.  The cause is unknown, however, it started close to Horombo Camp on Kifunika Hill on the Marangu Route in the moorlands, between 2800 to 4000 meters.

This moorland, both colder and drier than the foothill forests, is home to incredible fauna and flora.  Civets, servals and even the mysterious mountain leopards feed on mice and mole rats; giant protea with their amazing cone shaped blossoms, silky heathers, and golden flowers of the hypericum are in abundance.   This beautifully diverse and rugged landscape has attracted adventures, mountaineers and researchers for more than 100 years.

However, a raging fire threatens this precious ecosystem and is spreading rapidly and could spread to the mountain’s natural forests.

KINAPA (Kilimanjaro National Park Authority) and the entire conservation ecosystem in Tanzania is cash strapped due to the current world crisis.  With little resources, the authorities have been unable to properly support firefighters even with the basic water and food.

We need your help! Currently volunteers are fighting this fire with little to no resources.

The Kilimanjaro Project, an initiative of Kijani Pamoja “Green Together”, a registered NGO in the region, is an environmental and social impact program with the vision to plant millions of trees on the slopes of the mountain.

We’re mobilizing our networks and plan to feed the 500 volunteer firefighters for the coming days so they can keep trying to contain this fire and stop the spread.   We will ensure every firefighter gets one nutritious meal and water each day.

To keep give you perspective it costs about USD1500 / day to support these 500 volunteers.

We need your help to Ensure this amazing team can keep fighting and save the precious eco-system of the mountain.

KINAPA (Kilimanjaro National Park Authority) have also lost 12 buildings, hikers accommodation, 2 latrines and and solar panels at the Horombo Camp.  All excess funding raised will be firstly used to rebuild this camp, and then any further resources will go into tree growing around the mountain.

The first priority is to fight the fire and provide nourishment for the volunteers.

It is estimated that between 35,000 and 50,000 people attempt to climb Mount Kilimanjaro each year. It holds a special place in the hearts of many, including mine, and critical to the community that surrounds the mountain.

We need your help!

We’ll keep you updated on our efforts, from fire fighting to restoring burned buildings, to tree growing!   And give a FULL expense report as we go along.
