House Fire - Kevin and Nick

Around 2:20am on February 8, 2018, Kevin Walsh and Nick Hammerlund, cousins, awoke to a horrendous situation. Their home on the 6800 block of Logan Avenue South in Richfield was burning down. This is their story.
Kevin awoke in his main-floor bedroom to the glass of windows breaking under the pressure of the heat the fire was producing and then his smoke alarm went off. He needed to evacuate immediately. At the same time, next door neighbor Corrina and Justin Holt saw flames and called 911. Upon leaving the home, he dialed 911 too, and set out to determine if his cousin and housemate, Nick, was in the home. After discovering Nick’s vehicle in the garage, Kevin began pounding on the basement window where Nick was sleeping. The first responders, Sergeant Drayna, Officer’s Johnson, Schipp, and Stariha, were the first on the scene and supported Kevin in trying to wake Nick.
Nick was sleeping in the basement bedroom. With the help of the Richfield Police Department, they were able to wake Nick by pounding on the basement window and foundation. Ultimately it was Kevin's screaming that woke him. At that point, Nick was trapped by the flames in the upper stairwell. He took 5-gallon buckets that were in the basement, filled them with water, and fought his way through the flames. He escaped the fiery stairwell and proceeded to look for Kevin on the main level, thinking he was trapped as a result of the screaming he heard. In spite of the main level being on fire, he made it out of the home. Upon breathing the frigid, outside air, Nick doubled over and coughed up black smoke particles from inhalation. Nick was then guided to the ambulance in only his boxers. Unfortunately, while escaping, Nick sustained second degree burns to his head, chest, and hands. He and Kevin were taken to the hospital. Nick was kept over-night and released 12 hours later.
