Kenyan Orphan Fund

"We do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children" - Kenyan Proverb

Jambo! (Hello in Swahili)

Due to widespread poverty and illness in Kenya, there are a large number of children left without families to properly care for them. Many of these children are placed in orphanages. While orphanages can provide homes for children, they often lack the funds to provide more than minimal care.

In November, I will be going to Kenya for 4-months to work in an orphanage with children ranging from 2-16 years of age. My responsibilities will include teaching, cooking, cleaning, washing, caring for, feeding, playing with and entertaining.

I would like to raise money to provide the children in the orphanage with resources that will help improve the conditions there. I will be paying all of my own expenses and all of the money donated here will be used for the benefit of the orphanage.

What is this money going towards?

Photography Project

I would also like to donate some cameras to the orphanage I will be placed at to give the children the opportunity to have the control of a camera and capture the things they see as important to them. I will teach the basics of photography to the children and then give them the freedom to take pictures of whatever they choose. By the end of my stay, I would like to get copies of the photos printed both for the children and for myself. With the collection of photos, I would like to make a book of the children's work. After, I would like to sell copies of the books and donate the proceeds to the orphanage.

Updates

When I am in Kenya, I promise to post updates with photographs of how your money is contributing to the children and the orphanage. I will also be keeping a blog of my experiences if anyone is interested.

Thanks!

I think this experience of volunteering in a developing country will be one of the most challenging experiences of my life, yet at the same time rewarding. I appreciate all the support from all of you! Thanks so much!
