Journey of a Lifetime: Kenya

Three highly motivated, compassionate college students Emily Swenson (UW Madison), Lydia Pfluger (UW Stout), and Mckenzie Ryan (UW La Crosse) , are about to embark on an adventure of a lifetime.

This June we will be spending 4 weeks in Kenya as volunteers for the organization Networks for Voluntary Services, which is based in the country's capital Nairobi. We will we volunteering our time as part of a Women's Education and Empowerment program. Will will be working with women and their families who are affected by HIV/AIDS, providing them vital educational services to help prevent the spread of AIDS and how to live with this disease. We will also be providing these women with support services, and vocational training so they will gain the skills necessary for them to begin to be able to generate their own income to provide for their families.

The money that is donated will be used towards fees incurred on this trip. These include program fees, travel costs, vaccinations, visas, and passports. All program fees that we must pay go directly towards our host family and the organization we will be working for. If enough funds are raised to cover these costs for all three of us the extra money will be donated to the organization we are working for in Kenya. 

We are certain that this experience will not be easy or unimpassioned- We will be immersing ourselves into something that will change our lives for the better, and hopefully empower at least one other individual along the way.Leaving our mark on the lives of the people we will encounter would be the ultimate reward! We are still incapable of comprehending all that this journey will entail,but are committing with open hearts and passion to learn.
