My name is Kendra, a forensic nurse from Central Ohio, and I am a modern day abolitionist * .
*Abolitionist: a person who favors the abolition of a practice or institution, especially capital punishment or (formerly) slavery.
I have an incredible opportunity to partner with Exodus Cry and LuBlue and travel as a team member to Russia this summer. While there, I will work proactively to help those who are currently trapped in modern slavery; specifically, sex trafficking.
So who am I and why do I need your help?
Three years ago, I became a SANE nurse (sexual assault nurse examiner). If you have never heard of this and are currently picturing Law and Order SVU, you're kind of on the right path! We are specially trained nurses that complete rape kits, provide education, and fight for those who are suffering.
But my journey of helping those that suffer, especially those who have been victimized in one of the worst ways possible, doesn't start (or end) with SANE work. My story started decades ago with my own experience of sexual abuse from my biological father. Though this terrible thing was happening to me, I was one of the lucky ones. While that may strike you as a strange statement, hear me out.
1) I was too young to realize what was happening
2) I grew up in the church
3) I had (and still do) an amazing support system in my family and friends.
After my own scars healed, I felt called to something more. I had shared in their secret suffering and knew I was created for this unique purpose: to be a voice for the voiceless . While I was fortunate enough to have the support I needed to heal, many in similar situations do not. That is why I fiercely chase after every opportunity to help those suffering in silence.
Exodus Cry is the reason I am writing you fine people now. I was introduced to them eleven years ago and have partnered with them on several occasions. They are a faith based organization located in Kansas that sets to raise awareness, rescue and restore victims, and pray for (against) sex trafficking.
This summer, they are joining up with a similar organization in Russia, LuBlue, to send out teams during the World Cup to outreaches including:
*virtual reality outreach in the Red Square, (teaching locals to identify trafficking)
*outreach to the forests and strip clubs, and online outreach (reaching out to those trying to buy sex) *working with law enforcement by helping screen women coming into Moscow at the airport and identifying those we feel may have been trafficked. *going to orphanages, helping equip the women to understand signs of traffickers as they age out of the orphanage
*intercessory prayer over city
I have been selected to go from July 3rd to July 16th
Although this work is good and needed, it does not come free.
The funds needed would go towards:
*flight to Russia
*visa (I have a passport, this allows me to enter Russia)
*transportation/housing to Kansas for 3 mandatory trainings prior to depature
Please consider coming along side my teammates and I to help us combat the dark world that is sex trafficking.
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.
