Paint a picture of living with endometriosis~ Well the easiest way I can describe it is "not living".
Endometriosis feels like a ripple of sudden, twinge-like pain. Like the nerves in your abdomen have been singed with an extremely hot tool. The pain stabs repeatedly, with no obvious pattern. If you need to imagine the pain, think of the raw, sharp pain of a toothache, and imagine that feeling stuck perpetually somewhere (or perhaps many places) deep inside your abdomen.
The pain is often accompanied by a tugging sensation, the feeling that the area inside you is caught somehow, snagged on some unseen surface.
The pain has no pattern, it arrives and leaves as it wants. It can stay for hours, days or weeks on a whim. It can be escaped only by ongoing treatment, and painkillers. Both of which have their own unique side effects, or may only provide short relief to dull the pain.
Endometriosis hurts marriages and families, friendships and careers. Life is spent on the sideline~ never knowing when it will be at its worst.
The pain caused by endometriosis haunts you both in sleep and in waking, tiring your body and causing chronic fatigue. Depression is often a partner of chronic pain diseases. Endometriosis can steal the joy and happiness from the best years of a womans life.
In 2013 I was diagnosed with stage 4 (highest level) endometriosis. A hysterectomy and ablation of some of the diseased tissue was performed however within 1 year much of the debilitating pain has returned. Although excision is thought to be the gold standard of treatment - only a handful of specialists perform it in the US. Insurance companies have been slow to cover excision surgery and therefor it is very costly. This is especially frustrating when the recurrence rate of symptoms and disease with a CEC surgeon is only 7%. Last month I submitted my case and surgical file to the CEC for review and was accepted for treatment. My surgery date has been set for August 6th. Upfront costs total $6325.00. This is just a % of the total amount I will owe. The remaining surgery costs will be paid on payment plans both to the Center for Endometriosis Care and Northside Hospital Atlanta.
