Keep Charlene Warm

Donation protected
For the hundreds of people that walk or drive by her everyday, who may not know her name or her story... this is for you. That brave woman who steps out in front of cars, often going much too fast for her liking, who risks her life everyday for the children and teachers of our town and who does so with a good attitude, strength and tenacity to face whatever the day may bring; her name is Charlene.

Charlene is a school crossing guard. For anyone who knows New England weather (especially this year), you know, this cannot be an easy task. Yet Charlene faces it each and every day, through the rain, snow and bitter cold of our long winters. Even more impressively, Charlene walks about 2 miles to work before beginning her day, first at the middle school and then at the elementary school. When she is not out on the streets, Charlene is helping out in the school cafeteria, monitoring the students and cleaning up their messes.

Although many of us say, "thank you" and "have a good day", the true value of her job often goes unnoticed. Charlene stands out there in the bitter cold day after day. When we ask if she is warm enough, she always says “yes”. But we can see in her eyes how the bitter cold affects her. We look down at her shoes and think her feet must be frozen. And we know that even with our hands in our gloves, they are cold, so we can only imagine how her fingers must feel after hours of holding that STOP sign. And we know that we can do better for her.

We have started a fund to show Charlene how much we appreciate her. That our quick words in the morning, of "stay warm" are backed up with true compassion for the woman that she is. We would like to raise some money to buy Charlene some new winter and all-weather storm gear; heavy duty clothing like those used by outdoor construction workers, longshoremen, and policemen, the kind sold at Cabela's.

We think that a new pair of high quality warm winter boots, some wool socks to keep her toes warm every day, a pair of strong gloves, a new hat and scarf and hopefully a really warm winter parka for those long walks to work would help to make her days easier. We know that Charlene loves what she does, so we want to show her that we do too!

Please consider donating to bring some warmth and sunshine to this lovely lady who affects so many lives in our town.
