The Centro Regional de Estudios Musicales (Centro Regional de Estudios Musicales - CREM), based in Ajijic on the shores of Lake Chapala, Jalisco, Mexico, is facing a serious financial crisis due to the Covid 19 pandemic. Concerts have stopped, and for this reason, this innovative music education organization is struggling to carry out its activities. We seek support so that CREM can continue with its instrumental lessons, choral and ensemble training, activities that are of great benefit to local students. The Covid pandemic during the last 12 months has had a devastating impact on all facets of life. This is certainly true of education and in particular those studies revolving around artistic disciplines.
CREM was founded over 30 years ago and became a formalized organization in 2013 under the name of CREMúsica A.C. (civil association) thereby giving it an official not for profit status. The organization consists of associates who are the teaching staff, a board of directors and an advisory council. It is widely recognized as the foremost educational facility for musical development in the region.
CREM´s activities are directed at children and teenagers of the Lake Chapala region from all socio-economic levels and backgrounds. Their mission is that music education is accessible to anyone with an interest in music regardless of their family or economic situation and annual scholarships are awarded to many students who do not have the ability to finance their own tuition.
Since March 2020 CREM has had to do most activities online. As any teacher will tell you it is difficult to teach music online. It has been very frustrating for children and teenagers alike who benefit from a hands on approach to their musical education including the satisfaction of creating music as an ensemble.
The Regional Center for Musical Studies (CREM) is now facing financial hardship due to the organizations inability, because of lockdown restrictions, to perform live concerts. Live concerts have always been their mainstay of raising the necessary funds to sustain expenses such as faculty salaries, instrument maintenance, scholarships and administrative overheads. Parents of students pay an annual tuition fee for their children but this has fallen short due to the current economic conditions of the pandemic.
Michael Reason, conductor of the Lake Chapala Community Orchestra, is administering this campaign on behalf of CREM. Full accounting and results of the campaign will be announced to all donors whose names will be printed in the program of the first live concert performed after the pandemic is over.
